“Woe to the land whose king is a child and whose leaders are already drunk in the morning. Happy the land whose king is a nobleman, and whose leaders work hard before they feast and drink, and then only to strengthen themselves for the tasks ahead”. (Eccl 10: 16-17)

"When misguided public opinion honors what is despicable and despises what is honorable, punishes virtue and rewards vice, encourages what is harmful and discourages what is useful, applauds falsehood and smothers truth under indifference or insult, a nation turns its back on progress and can be restored only by the terrible lessons of catastrophe." … Frederic Bastiat

Evil talks about tolerance only when it’s weak. When it gains the upper hand, its vanity always requires the destruction of the good and the innocent, because the example of good and innocent lives is an ongoing witness against it. So it always has been. So it always will be. And America has no special immunity to becoming an enemy of its own founding beliefs about human freedom, human dignity, the limited power of the state, and the sovereignty of God. – Archbishop Chaput

USDA gets with the Trend

Many of you have been reading about the increasing number of government agencies developing their own SWAT teams. USDA seems to be getting with the new fad.

I have it on good authority that corn earworms and soybean leaf beetles have been coordinating strategy for assaulting USDA inspectors in the field. Never fear, the USDA is fighting back. Why else would they need body armor?

Can you believe this stuff? Unreal...

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2014/05/15/Dept-of-Agriculture-Orders-Ballistic-Body-Armor

Then again, it could be those hogs at the packing plants that meat inspectors are checking. The porcine victims are apparently not going to go down without a fight. Those hardy inspectors need to be able to level the playing field.

trends begin in California. Whether or not the Fat Lady is warming up here, only time can tell, but we suspect that by and large, the overall American Stock Mkt bull is very long in the tooth, and obviously the same for SF real estate values. Take care all, swb

  2. hold your satire Dan. those ear worms and leaf beetles have been getting fat eating GMO corn and soybeans. they are becoming so resistant to chemicals that they are practically unkillable. farmers around here have tried everything, including broadcast application of napalm using modified crop dusters. unfortunately a new mutant beetle strain nicknamed Godzilla has developed the ability to breathe fire, and can spit depleted uranium pellets up to 100 yards.

I would start worrying about that Godzilla strain of leaf beetle. USDA has just hired 1000 Japanese samurai and they grew up fighting Godzilla. Those beetles are toast buddy....

thanks for a great laugh... I am still chuckling over that!

    2. thank you Dan. you gave me the lead in! humor can ease a lot of pain. it also helps folks to find common ground. don't we all take life a bit too seriously?

it is obvious that your mission here is benevolent. i too believe in paying it forward. you are appreciated by many, though few bother to comment. moderate voices, moderate volume. so ignore the shouters. those confident in their beliefs feel little need to sell them.

have the best weekend Dan, and all reading this.

  4. Very poor weekly closing action in XAU, HUI indexes. swb (1 hour before the close)

  5. Steve,

    You are correct.

The utterly horrific action in the PM sector continues unabated.

For example, the bear market in the HUI kicked off in December 2011, and we are now a full 3 1/2 years into a decline.

The NYSE peaked in October 2008 and the bear market only lasted a mere 17 months and within 3 years the market had already recovered most of its losses.

The Full Blown Terrifying Collapse and Devastation which KWN constantly harps upon has already happened.

In the gold and silver mining sector.

Meanwhile the consumer appears to be the place to be.

Stocks like Nordstrom's breaking out today 14% to new world record highs on the biggest volume day in 18 months.

While companies like Newmont Mining are flopping around near decade lows mired in a depression, and juniors like TRX are desperately avoiding getting moved to the Pink Sheets on OTCBB, LOL!!!

Mark, I have nothing against the fact that you are not a perma bull :)
But...if gold is rangebound, 19 $ silver holds and silver is rangebound, at the moment and before new lows come, is this how you describe a directionless market? :)

  6. Well, our dear leader said he wanted a civilian army as well armed and trained as the military. Look back over history around the world and see what sort of regimes tended to do that......generally not ones that believed in individual freedom.

  7. Guys, a little research first. The USDA oversees the Forest Service who do busts on pot grow operations in Natl parks. The grow guys shoot first and ask later. any questions? C'mon!

    1. so leave the pot growers alone. they hurt nobody by growing weed. and they are putting the hurt on the violent drug cartels. win, win.

    2. I don't use drugs and I think it's impossible to stop anyone else from using them. Every attempt to control vice in mans short history has been a complete and utter failure. Look at how crime has taken over the USA since we declared the "war" on drugs. If we legalized all drugs people would die, and people would be addicted just like they are now. The only difference is that the cartels would be out of business in short order and that petty theft and robberies as well as prostitution would diminish over time as the black market fell apart. Millions of non-violent Americans would be released from the prison industrial complex which is charging three times more than an inmate can make working to house them per year. We could save billions by abolishing many government agencies that have been hell bent on destroying our communities by locking up mothers and fathers for non-violent offenses leaving many children orphans. Just think about the situation we are in objectively regardless if you agree or not.

    3. Yo John, Sooooo, now you are telling me that the USDA is in the business of enforcing drug laws, and this does not bother you!? Have you ever heard of the Department of Justice (USDOJ)? Is it not enough that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the United States Marshals Service (USMS) agencies deal with the illegal means of growing, possessing, using, selling, transporting, or buying Marijuana? Now the USDA Toooooo!? Since the current administration, the following agencies are now VERY heavily armed;
      1. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Office for Law EnforcementDepartment of Treasury
      2. Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations Division (IRS-CID)
      3. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA)
      4. United States Mint Police (USMP)
      5. Office of the Inspector General (OIG)
      6. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
      7. U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations
      8. Department of the Interior (USDI)
      9. United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS)
      10. United States Supreme Court Police

WHAT drugs or other illegal activity are they all enforcing that must go beyond the USDOJ???? How about you C’mon and wake the heck up!

  8. Pot grows or not. The USDA just lost a big face down when they tried to rustle some cattle in a contract dispute.

Reguardless of the merits of either case above our government does seem to be getting more forcefull in their controls and frankly fascist.

    2. I suppose the bigger question is does America really need the USDA or for that matter the Dept of Education, Dept of Energy, Homeland Security, or the myriad of other departments that are bureaucratic black holes for tax payer's money and aren't accountable to anyone or anything?

      Delete
    3. As a conservative/libertarian type my answer is a resounding NO. We could get by with a lot less government (and taxes) than we have.

However, the "there ought to be a law" attitude we teach and the feathering their own nest ethos pretty well guarantees it will get bigger.

Look to the EU for a vision of the future.

    4. If you look at the Constitution, These bureaucracies should not even exist. And the Federalist papers back it up. America was meant to be predominately governed from the ground up, or from the individual, Family, local community on up - or in other words, through a system of Federalism. America was not meant to be governed from outerspace bureaucrats who reside in D.C. far far away from the problems at hand. Yes, we NEED rule of law, otherwise freedom cannot exit and we’ll fall into a state of anarchy. But we can also fall victim of too much law, or Tyranny. Our Founding Fathers knew that maximum freedom existed in a perfect balance between Tyranny on one hand, and Anarchy on the other. And that balance is brought forth by allowing folks to govern themselves from the ground up – and abiding by the US constitution as the rule of the land. But that also requires an educated class of Americans who understand their GOD given rights -- education that pretty much is waning in modern day America.
